There are just certain amenities in our homes that are especially inconvenient to work around if they are not in good working order. Kitchen appliances definitely fall into this category. For example, day-to-day life at home looks a lot different without a refrigerator or dishwasher. If your refrigerator is hissing, sweating, leaking, or constantly cycling on and off, it’s time to consider whether or not you’re going to replace it or look into having it repaired.
The Modern Icebox – A Necessity!
Even the most high quality refrigerators eventually run into small problems. Because fridges don’t require a lot of maintenance, we forget that every few years they do need minor maintenance to keep running well. Interestingly enough, a side-by-side refrigerator with an icemaker is more than twice as repair-prone than a top or bottom model without an ice maker according to Consumer Reports. This is because ice makers are often the part that breaks.
Consumer Reports also suggests that fridges should last about 8 years. If yours breaks within that time frame, it’s probably a better idea to look into getting the correct replacement parts and having it repaired rather than purchasing a new one.
What About the Dishwasher?
If your dishwasher is still under warranty, it’s definitely worth it to look into a repair before replacing the entire unit. Most manufacturers sell replacement parts for their appliances, and a local appliance repair team should be able to get your dishwasher back in working condition with very little time and cost compared to purchasing a new one.
That being said, dishwashers are also on about an 8 year lifetime track, meaning if your dishwasher is no longer under warranty and is 8-10 years old, it’s probably worth considering repair or replacement.
